Commissioning and testing with the VTI

  • Show zero boil-off in static mode. Record the power the control box is putting into the heater in the helium bath to keep the He gas pressure in the dewar at 20mB above atmosphere.
Boil-off= 0.0 L/Hr, Power= 0.0 mW
  • Test the boil-off with the VTI sitting at 200K (record and keep an eye on the power the control box is putting into the heater to keep the He gas pressure in the dewar at 20mB above atmosphere).
Boil-off= 0.0282 L/Hr (0.677 L/day), power= 0.0 mW
  • Test the boil-off with the switch heater on (again record and keep an eye on the power output by the integra control box).
Not Pumping VTI Sample Space: Boil-off= 0.118 L/Hr (2.827 L/day), power= 0.0 mW
While Pumping VTI Sample Space: Boil-off= 0.129 L/Hr (3.092 L/day), power= 0.0 mW
  • Test the boil-off while pumping on the VTI with N/V closed.
Boil-off= 0.031 L/Hr (0.748 L/day), power= 0.0 mW
  • Run the magnet to 15T. N/V at 15% during sweep.
While sweeping B: Boil-off= 0.170 L/Hr (4.07 L/day), power= 0.0 mW
At 15T: Boil-off=???, power=??? Data no good: Opened blue valve to allow exhaust to exit from 13T-15T and while holding 15T as a precaution in the case of a quench
  • VTI at 100K without heater, AC controller PT2 heater creating pressure
Boil-off= 0.0L/Hr (0.0L/day), power= 332 mW
  • VTI at 1.4K (N/V at 2%)
Boil-off= 0.0L/Hr (0.0L/day), power= 500 mW

Commissioning and testing with the K100 fridge

  • Remove the VTI and insert the fridge.
  • Show zero boil-off with the fridge in static mode (all heaters off).
Boil-off= 0.0 L/Hr (0.0 L/day), power= 0.0 mW, Helium level changes +0.9% from 55.5% to 56.4% in 16.833 Hrs (AVG +0.053 %/Hr or +1.272 %/day)
  • Show zero boil-off ith the fridge in and sorb on (4K)
Boil-off= 0.0 L/Hr (0.0 L/day), power= 0.0 mW, Helium level changes -0.1% from 56.4% to 56.3% in 1.216 Hrs (AVG -0.082 %/Hr or -1.968 %/day)
  • Start the fridge up. Check base temperature is ok.
    Show zero boil-off (excluding pot pump) with the fridge at base.
Base T= 32.7 mK, Boil-off= 0.0 L/Hr (0.0 L/day), power= 450 mW Average, Helium level changes -10.3% from 53.7% to 43.4% in 92.833 Hrs (AVG -0.111 %/Hr or -2.66 %/day)

Installation of the 10/12T magnet onto the K400 fridge

  • Document the problems with the MSS support frame for the K400: ACIntegraInstallationIssues
  • Document the solution and wiring modifications
  • Show that the magnet support frame fits in the dewar, and that both the fridge and the VTI fit inside it at room temperature.
  • Cool the fridge and magnet, and check the magnet runs to 10T (watch out for switch heater and field calibratin changes).
